Step-by-Step Tutorial: how to rename videos to flv

Introduction: Sure, you can download videos using ClipNabber. But what's the deal with renaming the files? And what's FLV?

First things first, let's explain a few things. FLV stands for Flash Video. It is a video format that is used frequently on the web because it is highly compressed, and works well in SWF players. This is why most of the videos online can only be downloaded in FLV format. Oftentimes, videos are automatically downloaded in FLV format, and the worries stop there. However, a handful of sites don't do this. This could be because of how their servers recognize FLV files, or other problems. The only difference is that once you download the video, you need to MANUALLY rename the file so that it ends in the correct file extension. Most often this is .flv, but it may also be .mp4 of .wmv (check ClipNabber for this).

Below we show you the exact process for renaming the files:  Mac Tutorial  ||  Windows Tutorial under construction

Conclusion: You are all done! You now know how to rename files manually.
If you followed all the steps, but still have trouble, please see below for common issues:
  • Are you sure it is supposed to be flv? Check the download link on ClipNabber. If it says "WMV Download link" then it should be .wmv instead. In that case, follow the tutorial but substitute WMV for FLV.
  • If you have extensions turned off by default, when you rename the file you may be changing the actual name instead of the extension of the file. Search google for instructions on how to show file extensions be default.
